Art Faculty Exhibition Organized by Students

The Santa Monica College (SMC) Art Department is pleased to present Living Echoes, a free exhibition curated and mounted by students in SMC's Art 80/82/84 Gallery Exhibitions & Display course, taught by SMC art instructor Kim Garcia.
Living Echoes explores the enduring connections between memory, identity, material, and place. Through painting, sculpture, photography, installation, and mixed media, the exhibition brings together twenty-seven Santa Monica College faculty artists whose practices continue to evolve. In a fast-paced world where constant change can feel overwhelming, how do artists process what is happening around and within themselves?
Featuring work by Rhiannon Aarons, Liv Aanrud, Amanda Artsy, Terri Bromberg, Nehemiah Cisneros, Ismael de Anda III, Rebecca Frantz, Kim Garcia, Nevada Hardman, Carlson Hatton, Robert Brian Huerta, Jorge A. Jimenez Jr., Amy MacKay, Robin Mitchell, Margaret Oakley, Nathan Ota and Risk, Holly Perez, Kaelyn Rodriguez, Reinhart Revilla Selvik, Jane Shibata, Svetlana Shigroff, Emily Silver, Matthew Thomason, Marc Trujillo, Gerald Michael Vicich, Natasha Wheat, and John Zarcone.
The public is invited to join the opening reception on Tuesday, October 13, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Pete and Susan Barrett Gallery. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.
Students enrolled in SMC's Art 80, 82, and 84 Gallery Exhibition & Display courses conducted studio visits, produced a learning guide, and selected and curated the exhibition. This specialty course series provides hands-on experience in exhibition planning, research, operation, and management of gallery spaces.
The Pete and Susan Barrett Gallery is a student-centered contemporary art gallery adjacent to the Broad Stage at the Performing Arts Campus of Santa Monica College. Founded to create a dynamic gallery experience engaging the community and student body at large, the gallery is committed to closing equity gaps in higher education and in gallery and museum settings. The space serves as a hub for experiential learning through art, workshops, and campus and citywide activations.
